Delivering growth and investment in Northern Ireland

Ulster University’s landmark city-centre redevelopment brought to life two cutting-edge new buildings – Building BC and Building BD. This investment not only transformed the University’s teaching and research footprint but is also playing a pivotal role in the regeneration of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter.

The campus has been designed to facilitate smaller class sizes, more collaborative learning and the adoption of new technology to enhance the learning experience of the communities it serves. As part of the commitment to technology, the University wanted to ensure that everyone inside the new buildings had robust connectivity for their mobile devices.

We’re delighted with the mobile connectivity Freshwave delivered across our new campus buildings. Coverage from all the mobile operators is now seamless throughout both blocks, from teaching spaces and offices to communal areas and event rooms. This has made a real difference to day-to-day communication and productivity and we’ve had fantastic feedback from both staff and students following deployment.

Impact beyond the campus

Social impact was at the heart of Ulster University’s campus enhancement. As part of Freshwaves’s work, we’re undertaking a range of social value activities with the University. These include connectivity workshops and knowledge sharing with students, and signing up to the Warp It programme, the University’s environmental sustainability engagement initiative.

Connectivity that can grow in the future

Freshwave deployed wall-to-wall mobile signal across the two buildings, including stairwells, as student safety was paramount to the University. The 4G distributed antenna system (DAS) has an upgrade path to 5G and is driven from one comms room, with the ability to extend connectivity to other buildings on the campus if desired. The system also covers a multi-storey car park across the road from one of the buildings.

The University selected Freshwave through Crown Commercial Service’s Network Services 3 framework.
