The general acute hospital in Essex has been serving the local area since the 1950s and the site needed assured connectivity, fit for the 21st century.
We designed, deployed and are now providing ongoing support via a managed service of a 4G distributed antenna system (DAS). The DAS brings assured connectivity to 15 buildings across the site from all four mobile network operators, so no matter which network healthcare workers, patients and visitors use, they remain connected.
Project type
The Princess Alexandra Hospital knew it needed the right connectivity pathway to continue serving everyone who comes through its doors. As the site was built during the 1950s and 60s – and added to since – deploying its first mobile system required careful planning and coordination.
The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust serves a local population of around 350,000 people
All mobile network operators connected to the 4G DAS
Fifteen buildings across the site connected
The Princess Alexandra Hospital had long used Wi-Fi to provide connectivity across the estate. But as technology progressed they understood that a mobile network operator-approved solution was essential for their cellular connectivity pathway. The buildings on the hospital site, a mixture of permanent and temporary, are often repurposed for different uses, so all needed to be included in the coverage. We worked closely with The Princess Alexandra Hospital’s onsite cabling contractors to install the system, with the hospital remaining fully operational throughout the project.

Indoor Connectivity Outdoor ConnectivityDistributed Antenna Systems (DAS)
Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) enhance mobile coverage in large, complex environments like stadiums, airports, and multi-building campus facilities. Whether a lead-lined wall is blocking outdoor mobile signal or the number of people trying to use their phones is too high - DAS is ideal for providing consistent, reliable connectivity in the largest, most challenging spaces and places.
